Dictation software for Linux based systems
 

Hi Guys,

I'm new around here, so please pardon me if I'm not following the 'code of conduct'.

I'm desperately looking for a Dictation system for Linux (rpm will be great). The features required are
1. Record voice dictations
2. Ability to pause, replay a portion and then continue recording in a single track/file.

Basically just looking for a software version of a dictaphone, I do not need voice recognition/transcription. Just plain recording and playback. I'm wondering if any of you guys know of such a software.

The user (a lawyer) is using a RHEL5 on a notebook.

My searches so far haven't shown anything close to what I'm looking for, so I'm chickening out and trying the easier route :)

If you are just interested in sound recording and playback then theres tons of tools for that such as audacity for instance. Not sure on the continue recording in the single file.. Hmmm

Ok if you stop recording, you can play back. then if you move the marker to the end orf the recorded section you can start recording again. this will appear as a new set of tracks. when you are completed recording you can save AS and it will all be mixed down to two channels in the resulting file.

Make Sure the audio in different tracks does not overlap or that would be an issue.

I KNOW this isn't as simple as what you want.. but it's one option.

You could look at transcriber. Don't know if this will fit the bill or not.

Thanks farslayer. The user is currently using audacity and apparently it's too complex for him and he ends up overlapping the audio :(

I had a look at Transcriber and also found similar tools (Express Scribe Transcription for eg)they might be more help to his assistant than him

traverso looks like it does a good job of pickuing up recording where you left off, but you have to 'arm' the track you wish to record on.

I was unable to figure out how to make it play back what i had recorded so far though,..

I know exactly what you want to do, you described it well enough but I'm not finding anything that fits the bill perfectly.

I would suggest looking at ExpressDictate from NCH Software. It is one of several solutions they have for dictation and transcription, and they have a lot of Linux friendly programs. Some of them are even free.

Thanks jes, looks like it fits the bill perfectly. If only it didn't have the 50 buck price tag......well the best things in life are not free after all ;)

For what attorneys typically charge they shouldn't quibble over $50.00 ;-)

I too had some trouble finding a sound recorder for linux that would pause. After a few tries, however, I've found a thing called mhWaveEdit that does the job and is simple -- good as a simple dictaphone. I'm using Lubuntu 20.04 and I found it in the repository using Discover.
