Device driver problems under 2.6.12 kernel after upgrade from stock RH9 2.4.20-8

After kernel upgrade from 2.4.20-8 to 2.6.12 a few device drivers seem to have stopped working. For instance

[gonzo]$ cat /dev/sda[0-9]
cat: /dev/sda1: No such device or address

[gonzo]$ cat /dev/ttyS[0-9]
cat: /dev/ttyS1: No such device or address

I managed to fix the serial port problem by modprobing 8250 which also loaded serial_core module. But I haven't been able to fix the sda problem. I know some of the usb modules had their names changed with the 2.6.12 kernel (why oh why would you do that??) but I'll be damned if I can find the newer module. Here are the usb modules I have loaded under 2.6.12:

usblp 13184 0
usbmouse 5600 0
usbkbd 7232 0
usbhid 28100 0
usbcore 125708 9 ohci_hcd,ndiswrapper,usblp,uhci_hcd,usbmouse,usbkbd,usbhid,ehci_hcd

under 2.4.20-8:

usbdfu 9324 0 [at76c503-i3861]
usb-uhci 26348 0 (unused)
usbcore 78784 1 [at76c503-i3861 at76c503 usbdfu hid usb-uhci]

The at76c503 module drives a usb wireless adapter, so I'm fairly sure its not needed for usb. The only other problem I've been able to id is hotplug related under 2.6.12 the following is constantly showing up in /var/log/messages

/sbin/hotplug: no runnable /etc/hotplug/module.agent is installed

There is nothing like this under 2.4.20-8 logs. Under 2.6.12 my usb printer runs fine (custom driver of course) but I cannot mount my usb key, no special software was needed under 2.4.20-8 just
mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
and bam! contents of the key.

While I'm not holding out much hope for a solution here if someone has had problems with hotplug or a usb key under 2.6.12 could you please post and let me know?

This post is also under redhat specific forum. Sorry.

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
