Question /dev/ttyS0 problems

I'm having trouble configuring minicom on my laptop. I installed Mandrake 8.0 on a IBM ThinkPad 390E but I can't run the COM1.
I have enabled COM1 in the BIOS and my current configuration is
ls -l /dev/ttyS0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root uucp 4, 64 jun 27 09:47 /dev/ttyS0

/dev/ttyS0 not responding with minicom

any idea?

Thank you very much.

Is this an external modem plugged into com1 or an internal modem that is logicall on com1. If its internal are you sure its a fullblown hardware modem, not a dreaded WinModem?
