/dev/lirc does not exist

I've tried following instructions at this site

But I do not have a /dev/lirc device node. My laptop IR port is ttyS1 and I have followed all the other instructions at the above link, but I still have no luck. I simply get this output..

[root@localhost lirc]# service lircd start
Starting Linux Infrared Remote Control daemon: [FAILED]
[root@localhost lirc]# ls -l /dev/lirc
ls: /dev/lirc: No such file or directory
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
