Question /dev/gpmctl: No such device or address

Hi, first time post for me. I am using gpm at my terminal, and I can copy/paste with the mouse cursor, and the mouse cursor *does* show up, but when I try to use an app that uses the mouse via /dev/gpmctl, it simply doesn't work. When I try 'cat /dev/gpmctl', it responds 'cat: /dev/gpmctl: No such device or address'. The mouse works in X, though. Any ideas here?
