/dev/dvd is nonexistant how do i get it?

I have my dvd drive mounted as /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom . I think this is why I am unable to play dvd's in mplayer, but i cannot mount it as /dev/dvd /mnt/cdrom because the /dev/dvd just isn't there. How do i set this up? Thank you for your time.
