Weird sound problems on KDE

Hello. I've actually seen this error reported by many people before, but I couldn't find the solution here.
After telling arts that I use ALSA, it tells me that the device can't be opened for playback. /dev/dsp /dev/mixer are chmod 666. I added myself to the sys group and the audio group. And of course, I loaded my alsa module on startup. Any suggestions?

I got around a similar /dev/dsp does not exist problem by running alsaconf, part of the alsa-utils package in Mandrake.

How do you use alsaconf?

It's been a long time, I don't remember what I was talking about, many things have changed, since then. I imagine I thought alsaconf did something to create/enable /dev/dsp.

To run it, type alsaconf at the root prompt in a console and press Return. It is a configurator wizard run in console and, perhaps, will be self-explanatory. I am not particularly familiar with it. Presently, in Mandriva 2007.1, it is in the alsaconf package.

It might be a good idea to look at the man page:

man alsaconf
