/dev/dsp no longer busy /no sound
Using " fuser " i get a reply concerning /dev/dsp being busy.
artsd was responsible for that. But i have tried to get some sound out , and nothing !! Any idea ??? I have tried so far to change jack's plug but cannot see why the sound is missing. Everything is ok, i have no strange messages at start up. Sound is from ( or should be ) MSI mainboard onboard sound ship ( ac97 - VIA8233A ). Alsa is ok and i change module from via8233 to via82xx, as via8233 was not available. |
alsamixer settings?
Cheers, Tink |
i don't know if it can be...
but i had problems with non-root users that i had no access to /dev/dsp.. so i advice chmod 777 /dev/dsp as non root Cheers, Slackie1000 |
If you are root and there's no sound you might wanna try upping the volume in the mixer. Seems to be the biggest sound stopper. Alsamixer's good (although I like aumix - nice in terminal as well as the GUI). Be sure the main and PCM aren't muted. If its a not root thing, you can chmod as said, or, as I have found useful, to add yourself to the group audio. adduser whoeveryouare audio
Log out and back in. You should have sound. |
i have this same problem but it is due to different apps trying to use the oss driver. any ideas on how to make the driver accessable by many apps?
|
alsa is supposed to solve that. It seems to be the case with my Mandy 9.1 install. I seem to be able to use more apps that have sounds at once than ever before. Perhaps the SB Live! card I got helped a bit too. Dunno. I'm still learning (after all, I ain't dead yet.lol)

Thanks to all for all those replies!!
I gonna try as soon as i can 8-) Just another question : how can i look at alsamixer settings ? aumix and alsa are both used and seems to be ok ? ( i use "aumix -q" for aumix, can i use the same command for alsa ? ) |
yeah... i could make my alsa driver detect my card if anyone would bother replying to my thread in hardware and give me some help. then i would not have the issues i have with oss, including the multiple apps that use sound issue.
