desktops on fedora

I was wondering if a desktop from a different version of Linux could be added to fedora like the GNOME or KDE.

I was thinking maybe from a version of Linux that I use that's an integrated fully text based but not a command line speaking desktop fore the blind.

If you haven't guessed I'm blind.

I also know about systems like emacspeak but I like the environment of my desktop.

Fedora offers Gnome and KDE for desktop environments. I also occasionally use Xfce. I would imagine almost any of the other available desktop environments could be installed as well if desired.

Which desktop do you already use that you like? Perhaps what you're really looking for is a different windows manager like Blackbox or Fluxbox. I believe these are text-based only windows managers although I have no idea how well they work in an assistive technology environment.

Here's a web site that may help you find the desktop or windows management environment that would fit your needs: http://xwinman.org/.

You should check out the available desktop environment packages in the yum repositories. It is also possible to yum install environment components like file and window managers.

It is not usual to transplant a desktop environment from one OS to another. Though you can always install from source.

My curiosity is what feature(s) is(are) available in KDE or Gnome in which other distro(s) that seem to be missing in Fedora? Rather than worry about transplanting a DE, maybe you should just find out how to install the package that provides the feature.

If you haven't already found an answer, I would be glad to consult a local (Houston) blind user for you.

I am sorry for the delay.

I found what I was looking for but would love it if you could consult a local (Houston) blind user on this type of thing,
Or better yet give me your contact info if you can.

Normally I see him on Sat., but HAL is closed tomorrow, so it will be 8 days.

To preserve privacy, why don't you e-mail me (or post) something I can fwd. to him. Or, I could just give him a link to this thread. Your choice.
