desktops & window managers. alsi su -l :access denied!

i sort of know the difference(i think). but can i run a window manager like sawfish without a desktop like gnome. cos gnome and kde run slooooowly on my pc. well kde does. gnome is only slow when i have mozilla open. btw should mozilla take +/- 30sec to open?
I know my P2 400 w/ 64mb RAM is waaaaaay outdated but even bloatware XP is faster.

anyway all i want is a nice wallpaper, a few icons, and a terminal or two. no cpu/ram meters or eyes that follow my mouse around

so if compiled the sawfish source, i'm guessing i'd have to edit either display manager or xsession in rc.conf, is that right?

also i tried to login with su -l so i could 'make install' but when i enter the root password it just says access denied!
