Unhappy .desktop files not starting in KDE

I installed a windows game using wine and after that my desktop icons are not working anymore. all the .desktop files have their file extension showing, which usually is not the case and when I try to start them it asks which program to use to open the .desktop file.

So what I'm asking here is: Where do I find the program in KDE that is used to deal with .desktop files so I can insert it there when it asks for it?

Well, to answer your question, to run a .desktop file from the command line, you would use:
Code:
kfmclient exec /path/to/whatever.desktop
That said, I don't think the answer is to just insert that when you're asked what program to use. The fact that KDE is asking at all indicates that your file associations are severely messed up and you would be better off fixing that underlying problem than treating the symptom. Come to think of it, if the file associations are broken, then kfmclient probably won't work as expected anyway.

I would start by firing up KControl and verifying that the application/x-desktop MIME type is present in your file associations. You should also check the properties of some desktop files and see if KDE is correctly identifying their MIME type.

Well you were right, it didn't work to just enter that. In the KDE settings I can find x-desktop but there's no program assigned to it. And in the properties for the .desktop files it recognises them as CSPY type documents.

EDIT: Also just for the record, none of the other file assosiations are messed up... only the .desktop files.

Well, there shouldn't be any program assigned for .desktop files, so that's good. You might want to take a look at the file associations and see what's up with CSPY files (whatever they are). Perhaps they're conflicting. Maybe you can delete that MIME type (assuming you're not using it)?

Thanks for the help, I solved the problem. Apparently wine had made a new file association for .d* files and obviously .desktop falls in that category. So deleting that association fixed the problem.
