Desktop Effects missing from System<Preferences<Look and Feel

Hey,

I'm running a two day old reinstall of Fedora 8, completely up to date. I wanted to screw around with Compiz-fusion so I installed the proprietary drivers and the necessary compiz-fusion packages. When I went to enable the desktop effects, IT WAS MISSING. I can't find it anywhere. Any idea where it went?

I have an Nvidia 8500 GTS video card. The proprietary driver installed perfectly fine.

Thanks,

Brandon

Take a look at http://www.howtoforge.com/compiz-fus...rce-fx-5200-p2 its says its for a nvidia 5200 card but the instructions installing compiz will be the same.

I'm already familiar with that how-to, but it has nothing to do with Desktop Effects NOT being present. This is something that gets installed during the installation of the system. For whatever reason, it's not there now. I've installed before, done nothing differently, and it's not there now.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Brandon

First of make sure you have the compiz-gnome package installed. Also, check to make sure you have the file "/usr/share/applications/redhat-desktop-effects.desktop". If you don't have one then make one. Paste the following into the redhat-desktop-effects.desktop file.
Code:

Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Desktop Effects
Comment=Select desktop effects
Exec=desktop-effects
Icon=desktop-effects
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Settings;DesktopSettings;
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
X-Desktop-File-Install-Version=0.13

Good luck.

This is quite odd. I didn't do this the first time I had installed Fedora 8. I followed the tutorial that you posted the same night that I posted this problem. Today, I found in Applications<System Tools a Compiz Icon (thing) and I clicked on it and Compiz just worked. Despite there being NO System<Preferences<Look and Feel<Desktop Effects. Wobbly windows, workspace cube, writing with fire... EVERYTHING.

I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Thanks,

Brandon
