My F7 box has a GeForce 6600 graphics card and driver kmod-nvidia-100.14.11 installed. After enabling Desktop Effects, shutdown results in a hang. Googling this, there are plenty of other people with a similar problem.
After figuring out how to turn off Desktop Effects - the developers deserve a mention in the 2007 "Worst User Interface Implementation Award" for using colour coding of the "Enable Desktop Effects" button instead of using text to indicate the button's state - the shutdown problem seems fixed.
I've found a thread which points the finger at the kmod-nvidia-100 driver. Replacing it with an earlier driver apparently fixes the problem. Before I try this, has anyone else experienced this issue with the kmod-nvidia-100 driver, and fixed it by replacing it?

I had the same (GeForce FX5200 card) and replaced the kmod-nvidia driver with the official Nvidia driver. Supposedly this offers less performance or less functionality but I don't need anything too clever from the graphics card and this driver just works
Thanks, Wayno. I uninstalled my kmod-nvidia-100.14.11 package, and downloaded and ran NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run from Nvidia's site. This package seems to be the only current driver available, although I can find 1.0-9755 in their archives. This package has resulted in no change in the behavior of shutdown if Desktop Effects is enabled. Can you advise what version of the driver you installed, that fixed this problem for you?
Thanks,
Jon
Edit:
I now have this problem solved. After downloading 100.14.11 from Nvidia's site, and installing this driver (had to install kernel-devel and gcc first, so installation could build a new kernel module), Display setup could not see the new driver. Ditto legacy driver 1.0-9755.
In the end, I used Add/Demove Software to install kmod-nvidia-96xx-1.0.9639-1 for my kernel (the latest 96xx driver listed), and the problem goes away.
I'm using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11 and all the problems disappeared after installing it. That's with kernel 2.6.22.1-33 - incidentally I can't get hold of the kernel-devel package for this kernel so had to link the kernel source to the newer 2.6.22.1-41 kernel in order to build the Nvidia driver. I can't run the 2.6.22.1-41 kernel because it causes me large headaches with wireless networking. Long, long, boring story
Thanks, Wayno. Just so I'm clear about this, I understand you originally had kmod-nvidia-100.14.11 installed from the livna repositories, then experienced the shutdown problem when Desktop Effects were enabled, but you fixed this problem by replacing the driver with the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run package installation from Nvidia's site? Have I got that right?
