Designjet 500 on LPT1

One of my clients has an HP Designjet 500 42inch wide floor standing ink jet plotter. It is currently attached to an NT 4.0 server's parallel port and shared on the network. We have two Linux servers installed to replace the NT boxes. The problem is that I can not get the Linux boxes to act as a print server for the plotter. I defined a raw queue using LP0 and had XP workstationns try to print via the Linux share but the jobs fail to print. The plotter goes from Ready to Processing Job but then fail to produce output. The XP workstations are using the same drivers that successfully print via the existing NT share. I tried using the USB port on one of the Linux servers but the same filures.

I don't understand why a raw print queue won't spool the data correctly.

Neither do I understand it :-)

I had the same setup for some time with a HP DeskJet and W2k clients. (When I still had Windoze clients). It just worked.

Just a few things to check:

- You say you created a que with LP0. I assume you mean LPD?
- Did you share the DJ500 using Samba? I did.
- I am not sure whether a DJ can do that as well, but have you tried "dir > lpr"?
- Did you try to "print to file" on the XP box, take the file to the Linux box, and did "cat myfile > lpr"?
