Dependency Hell :-(

Hey all :)

This is just a warning for anyone that wants to install Gimp 2.0 on their PC's... Don't get me wrong by what I say as I love the Gimp and seriously believe it's better than Photoshop BUT downloading the Gimp rpm's and then trying to install, found I needed an extra couple of packages... After about an hour I finally have Gimp installed but this is the list of what I have downloaded and installed to satisfy Gimp...

atk-1.6.0-1.1.fc1.nr.i386.rpm
atk-devel-1.6.0-1.1.fc1.nr.i386.rpm
gimp-2.0-1.pre3.4.1.i386.rpm
gimp-data-extras-1.2.0-10.noarch.rpm
gimp-devel-2.0-1.pre3.4.1.i386.rpm
glib2-2.4.0-1.i386.rpm
glib2-devel-2.4.0-1.i386.rpm
gtk2-2.4.0-1.i386.rpm
gtk2-devel-2.4.0-1.i386.rpm
gtk2-engines-2.2.0-5.i386.rpm
libexif-0.5.12-0.fdr.2.1.90.i386.rpm
libexif-devel-0.5.12-0.fdr.2.1.90.i386.rpm
libexif-gtk-0.3.3-1.i386.rpm
libexif-gtk-devel-0.3.3-1.i386.rpm
pango-1.4.0-1.1.fc1.nr.i386.rpm
pango-devel-1.4.0-1.1.fc1.nr.i386.rpm
xorg-x11-libs-0.0.6.6-0.0.2004_03_11.9.i386.rpm
xorg-x11-libs-data-0.0.6.6-0.0.2004_03_11.9.i386.rpm

And that was silencing the dependancy for libcrseleng.so.2 that it was asking for...

BUT as i said before, if you have the patience to find these rpms it's all good cos the final product has been very well designed and a huge improvement over Gimp 1.0 series :D You no longer have 4 dialogue boxes - they've cut that down to 2... More info from The Gimp Homepage.

:D

this really isn't relevant to gimp at all, any new application on an old distro is likely to require some updates. it's HOW you do the updates though, and you seem to have done it the hardest way possible for RPM's.... never heard of apt or yum? does it all instantly.

and this is why you use debian...and apt...:)

Or compile from source...that's what I did, I think I only needed to install one updated package (forgotten what).

AMMullan 03-27-2004 09:35 PM

Tried apt but didn't work :-( Maybe I need to add more hosts to my conf but yeah it said I had the latest version (yeah I normally would use source but was wanting to get my hands on Gimp2 cos I used it onn my Windoze box and was impressed)...

Thanks for your replies - wasn't meant to be pointing it completely at Gimp lol... Interesting to see that only 2 sources were needed when compiling it tho - thought you'd need the same updates....

Thanks again :)

To keep it short, Gentoo doesn't have problems like this because portage automatically takes care of dependencies when emerging new packages.
