Dedicated firewall setup... in VMWare?

I've just introduced myself to the joys of using VMWare (the 30day trial) and I had a thought...

Since you can allow your 'virtual OS' access to physical hardware (such as a modem), and you can create a 'virtual network' between the host and virtual OSs, would it be possible, and more importantly, would it be viable to setup a dedicated firewall by running Smoothwall as a virtual OS and having your host OS connect to the 'net through SW over the virtual network?
