Debootstrapping karmic powerpc arch results in error

Hello,

I'm trying to retrieve the powerpc arch of Karmic Koala with the following command:

Code:
sudo debootstrap --arch powerpc karmic /home/xbmc/karmic http://archive.ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu
However, I get the following error:
Code:
E: No such script: /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts/karmic
I used the debootstrap from the official repo:
Code:
debootstrap --version
debootstrap 1.0.12
Can anyone help me do this? Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Dennis

Hi Flex,

a have a similar problem at the moment.

I try to install karmic via debootstrap on a armel-platform running debian lenny.

To avoid the problem with the missing script, i created a symbolic link to one of the existing scripts. I have used "gutsy" as the source, since "hardy" and "intrepid" are also linked to the "gutsy"-script:
Code:
cd /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts
ln -s gutsy karmic
I started the debootstrap with the following command:
Code:
debootstrap --arch=armel karmic /mnt/ubuntu http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports
Perhaps you have to change your mirror to the one i have used.
The standard mirror only has the packages for x86-plattforms and you need the packages for powerpc.

Regards,
Simon

Update:

The solution i have posted above does not work properly.

Downloading and extracting the packages works fine:
Code:
I: Retrieving Release
I: Retrieving Packages
I: Validating Packages
I: Resolving dependencies of required packages...
I: Resolving dependencies of base packages...
I: Checking component main on http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports...
I: Retrieving MANY_PACKAGES
I: Validating MANY_PACKAGES
...
I: Extracting MANY_PACKAGES
But after the last package is extracted, the debootstrap process stops with the following error message:
Code:
W: Failure trying to run: chroot /mnt/ubuntu mount -t proc proc /proc

Simon

I feel stupid, we forgot the --foreign option!
I used the following on debian lenny and it worked:
Code:
debootstrap --foreign --arch=powerpc karmic ubuntu http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports
Haven't got time yet to check if the chrooted environment is actually working due to my box being down, I'll provide results when I can

Hi Dennis,

i do not need the option "--foreign" since i work directly (via ssh) on my armel-platform (a Buffalo Linkstation Live).

i also tried to do same the procedure for jaunty. and it works fine. the command i used is:
Code:
debootstrap --arch=armel jaunty /mnt/ubuntu http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports
I have no explanation, why it works for jaunty and the same procedure fails for karmic ...

Regards,
Simon
