Question Debian > switching from XFree to

I am running debian sid. I have decided to move on and replace XFree with However, I found it impossible to google any papers on the subject. does not hold any howto-s or papers that would help me either.

Can you please include any links, manuals and/or advice on how to achieve this with as little trouble as I posibly could?

My quess is that debian moves to xorg only after Sarge has been released. Then it's easier to make such dramatic changes

I got it

Hey - FWIW - i'm running debian testing (not sure if that's sid or sarge - i think it's sarge) on my laptop and I downloaded the 6 tar.gz's for xorg, built it for about 4 hours after compile failures and missing headers, etc. and it eventually worked!! Then i did a make install as root and restarted X. It appears to work!! I get an error message about an xkb setup upon startup but the X server version says its xorg 600800000 something or other. I have no idea how to configure all the cool stuff yet, but I'm on my way. If you need any help, let me know. I can send over any files you need (although I'm still not 100% sure how to set everything up).

So, at least it is apparantly possible to get it running. I also noticed that vi doesn't work anymore because of a dependency on some xf86 libraries, so I uninstalled it and it took out KDE with it. oh well. I can live without KDE for now, since I'm running Gnome.

I'll let you know if i find anything else out or get something cool working.

I wondered the same thing, heres what dpkg bot in #debian says about it.

[dpkg(~dpkg@dpkg.user)] rumour has it, xorg is an alternative X implementation
(a fork of XFree86 4.4RC2) from the X.Org Foundation -
the current release is X11R6.8. It will not be
packaged for Debian until after the Sarge release. At
that time, Debian will probably go with the new
modular packages of, if it is ready, or the
monolithic release if not. See
027.74293658.html for more information .
Guess il stick to xfree for the time being.
