debian sarge upgrade 2.6.6-1-686-smp

I have been working with debian for couple of years, and until now everything was perfect.

I am trying to upgrade the kernel from 2.4.25-1-686-smp to 2.6.6-1-686-smp, the apt-get install works fine, but when I restart I get
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init 424 cannot open dev/console
kernel panic: Attempetd to kill init

And that's all.

I am on a dell dimension 8300, 3GHz, 512 RAM.

I have no idea what is the problem, I have all the initrd things needed and if it was a problem of some package missing apt-get should tell me.

Any suggestions?
