debian problems when connecting to the internet

so i downloaded the 180mb iso (for network install) and got it on a cd, booted up and everything was fine until the network stuff, it cave me default IP, subnet and all was fine, user and psw all great but when it starts connecting to the ftp to download the needed packages it doesent to nothing... im in the cl with that computer and really could use the help to set up a working internet connectio

Debian woody
256/128 connection(adsl)

when i do : ifconfig eth0 i get an error : device not found, so heres the question, how can i see what device am i using and how can i use it in cl ?!?
