debian Live USB compiler

I wish to install Debian Live onto bootable USB flash drive in such way that, after booting from it, I can compile and add other programs (that need 'make install' and are not in repository)

So, do you mean you want a persistent USB or you want to make a remaster?
by default you can compile programs with Debian Live on USB anyway, just install the dev tools, etc
Could you be more specific?

I'm not sure what its called. There is this specific software that I badly need (and is the sole reason for creating liveUSB in first place). But that software is not available as .deb package, only as tar.gz source. So, I want to install and use it on liveUSB. It has been tested on Debian and works.

BTW, is it possible to create liveUSB version of Debian that is already installed on harddisk? (I want to move my Debian testing to USB)

hello grange

well, there are a few ways I think to do this...

If you have a Debian hdd install with your made-from-source app already installed you can use Remastersys to create a Debian liveusb with persistence
http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/

You could also grab one of the Debian Live builds here, put it on usb with persistence and add your app
but it would only be there when running persistent.
http://live.debian.net/

if any questions ask cause I am familiar with making Debian testing builds with remastersys

You can do it with live-helper (but with remastersys too)
Code:
apt-get install live-helper
su
cd
mkdir Live
cd Live
lh_config --bootstrap copy --debian-installer live
lh_build
It will take a while.
It will copy _everything_ ; also the data. In case you got much you need to move them out of the way.

For compiling you need the package "build-essential". I think.

To exclude data and such more easy you could use rsync.
rsync the complete installation to the usb-stick, exclude what you don't want.
chroot to the stick and install grub to it.
