Debian installing dev tools

I have a highly slimmed down version of debian etch via the debootstrap method plus a few 'apt-get installs' for handy tools.

I am wondering whats the bare minimum tools required for kernel compilation and c/c++ compiling??

Im running and have kernel 2.6.18-5-486 sources.

Is their a .dep file that has everything one needs for development or else one very large list of packages i can apt-get by hand.

Thanks!

Hmm that command is quite usefull to remember tho Im getting alot of compiler errors still. Im downloading a copy of the vanilla 2.6.22 kernel and will post the errors. Sofar they all seem to be the "expected symbol XR$*0" garbage that leads me to believe im missing a locale package.

Currently I only have locales: en.US.iso-8859-1, en.US.iso-8859-15 en.UTF-8 with UTF-8 set as default so nfs/samba filenames stay in the appropriate languages and remain manageable.

Current Package List

It appears I cannot compile any version source from apt-get but a vinilla source from kernel.org compiles without a single error. Strange but running 2.6.22.6 now so im happy!
