Debian file name issue...(easy to solve?)

I just finished getting Debian all nice and installed on an old P166 machine I had lying around w/ around 2.3gb hard disk...(nothing special) I installed Debian 3 r2 (woody) on it...had a few issues (never installed debian before) but I got through them and been playing around with it for the past few days...however since no sound support? with the default kernel I decided I wanted to upgrade to 2.6.6 so I downloaded it and burned it to a cd (network not working yet)

the problem is that when I was compiling modules, I got a error..I saw on Linux Forum that I needed to install the module-int-tools...so I downloaded that...however I cannot get it to install and the problem is very interresting...

somehow Debian is limiting file length to only a few characters then adds a "~" to the end, so when I'm trying to compile it....well...it cannot find the approperate files because the stupid file system isn't naming them right...:tisk: It was running on ext2, so I upgraded it to ext3..(adding journal) however it still didn't fix it...

Does anyone have any ideas...

(while writing this I realised that I forgot to update /etc/fstab to ext3 rather than 2..will go try that now...)

Note: I've been using RH9 and Suse 9 (mostly Suse) for almost a year now...and well...gotta love it...
