Debian boot problems with SATA

I'm trying to boot using GRUB on an IDE hard drive, telling it to use a SATA hard drive. I use this in my menu.lst to boot:
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel DRNICK SATA
     root (hd1,0)
     kernel /boot/vmlinuz- root=/dev/sda1 ro console=tty0
     initrd /boot/initrd.img
hd1 is my SATA drive, so is /dev/sda1. I've formatted it as ext3 and copied my IDE drive to it, then edited the /etc/fstab to reflect the new drives. I don't think it's detecting the SATA drive (even though my kernel can), because I get a kernel panic saying that /sbin/init can't find dev/console. What do I do?

Does trying to boot from a Grub prompt work eg like this after hitting c at the Grub splash screen.

root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz- root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img
I'm not positive about the initrd line being needed/how it is used as I never use one but it seems like the logical assumption to make if needed. BTW how did you copy the install?
