Log in as root — if you can remember that password! If Debian doesn't allow root login to the GUI, press Ctrl-Alt-2 for a terminal login. Then you can give the command
passwd [your user name here]
and set a new password. Press Ctrl-Alt-7 (or maybe Ctrl-Alt-7) to get the graphical login screen back.

Were you over-complex with your user password? It doesn't have to be anything fancy, because you will be using something different for root and yet another thing for financial transactions.

PS If you've forgotten the root password, see here

Since you don't say what "several ways" you tried, or what the results were, how can we guess? Either log in as root and change your password, or boot from the CD/DVD you used for installation, go into rescue mode, and (since you'll then be root), mount your hard drive, and edit the /etc/shadow file, to remove your user's password. Reboot normally, and you should then be able to log in with no password, and change it.

Sorted!!!

Thx a lot guys for your replies..It finally helped me access my account.

What I did was I went into the recovery mode option, logged into the root and typed in the command

# passwd --delete username

and Tadaa!!!my password was deleted and so I could able to access my account without any authentication :-D
