debian 3.1r2 netinst question
My question is why can't I change the MAC address in a shell executed by the installer? I execute ifconfig and it shows eht0 with the settings provided earlier in the install but if i try running

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 hw ether <mac address>
ifconfig eth0 up
route add default gw <default gw>

it just leaves the same mac address. I've tried searching on google for a bug or something but I couldn't find anything relevant. Any ideas?

I'm just grasping at straws here. Are you using the correct format for the MAC address? AB:CD:EF:12:34:56

The only other idea I have would be to try using the first full Debian CD to do a base install (no gui). Then try doing the MAC address change and all the updates and rest of the install. With Sarge you can use base-config and tasksel to basically go through the install again.

yes, the format is definetly correct. i did install a base system as you said and obviously the same exact command worked, albeit on eth1, as eth0 is disabled because "nobody cared!" (whatever the hell that means).
