dealing with .rar files in linux?
 
my friend wants to send me some stuff but when he uses winzip it zips it as .rar. Can programs like tar,gunzip, bunzip2 etc deal with those files?

There's rar for Linux. It's just like winrar (and also from the same manufacture) but it's command line only (which is better, IMHO ;))

You might also find this helpful, which provides access to the portable source code for unrar.
