dd: opening `/dev/sda' : No such device or address (what???)

root@0[/]# uname -a
Linux Knoppix 2.6.12 #2 SMP Tue Aug 9 23:20:52 CEST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux
root@0[/]# whoami
root
root@0[/]# ls -l /dev/sda
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 Apr 14 2001 /dev/sda
root@0[/]# dd if=/dev/sda of=/tmp/clone.mbr
dd: opening `/dev/sda': No such device or address
Why does it have to put me throught this...

After just 15 minutes - mmmm; IT probably wasn't for you anyway.

Edit: o.k., enough levity. I went and checked on a Fedora system - I get "dd: opening `/dev/sda': Permission denied" as expected.
Dunno what your problem is.

BTW, use a "count=?" on that dd for the MBR.

No after 7 years. I dont want to spend the rest of my life arguing with a bunch of silicon chips. Might not be for me, other people might enjoy it...

Thanks for your answer. count doesnt change a thing, and i am root, so afaik permissions should not be a problem...

Ill google for more info, but any tip from here is appreciated.

I need to clone the mbr, and if this doesnt work, id appreciate any help on other methods to do it.

Ok... OK it was hda not sda.
