Date: relocation error. Receive this error during boot up.
I just completed migrating a Redhat 9 server to new hardware and a virtual machine. If I attempt to alter the time or date with the date command I receive the following message.
"date: relocation error: /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0: symbol __resp, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in the file libc.so.6 with link time reference"
This also comes up during the bootup process along with "sleep: relocation error". I have never done I migration like this before and would consider myself a novice to linux. This server runs an old software package and I would prefer not having to totally reload it. The software we run appears to be run fine at first glance but I don't want to roll this out until all errors are resolved. Any help would be appreciated.
What program did you use to migrate it ? VMware Converter, Platespin ? .. it's a bit unusual for the migration to break things, did you perform an upgrade of some kind ?
We used VMware converter. We migrated to a system from Dell Precision IDE to HP dl380 SCSI. In order to boot we had to reload the Grub but now we're getting the errors:
1. VFS: Cannont open root device "LABEL=/" OR 00:00
2. pLEASE APPEND A CORRECT "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00
I usually do the migration in the following order for an IDE based system:
Pre-migration(physical):
- Add the appropriate scsi driver
- create a new initrd with scsi support
- add an extra grub entry using the new initrd and ensure device is SDx
Migrate
Post-migration(virtual):
- boot using the new grub entry
- if boot is successful, make the new entry the default
