date command do not keep time set

I am in the middle of installing getnoo. I set the time with the date command, it worked just fine. I was not able to finish installing so I shut down the computer for the night. I rebooted with my gentoo live cd today, the date was all messed up again, so I used the command again. Just for an experiment I rebooted, the date was unset again. Shouldn't the time and date be stored permantly? I just built a new system with a soyo sy-k7vme motherboard. I guess I am kind of worried it is a hardware problem.

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. There is a battery on the mobo to maintain the bios settings. It may have gone bad. Or, the onboard clock chip may have gone bad.

Will it hold the time as long as the machine is powered up? If so, then I would check that battery.
