Data crash and recovery with Libre Office

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 (not dual boot)on a Hewlett Packard (64bit) 500Gb hard drive. I am over-the - moon with Linux, but I have one problem. I am using Libra Office as came with the installation disk. I spend a lot of time converting old Public Domain publications to .pdf format. In order to do this I need to have an original version and I copy and paste this into the updated version, and then make any changes necessary to the new version (picture size adjustment, spelling, indexing, etc). The problem is that frequently both windows disappear completely, and on attempting to restore them, a recovery takes place and I can continue. This happens so frequently now, that it is becoming tiresome and unusable. Is this a bug in Libre Office, or is it unable to handle two windows at the same time? I never had this problem with Microsoft Word. I would be loath to return to Microsoft Windows again. Has anyone got any ideas on this one please?

According to the discussion threads listed above, there seems to be a bug involving something called lxpanel (I don't use Ubuntu so I don't know what it is).

But, according to this thread
http://askubuntu.com/questions/41329...domly-crashing
the problem lies in the Sun JDK. Uninstalling the Sun JDK and installing OpenJDK fixes the problem. Read through this thread. It names a log file in your home folder that you should read to determine if Java is throwing errors.
