DansGuardian fail to start

Hello,

I just spun up a turnkey Debian Jessy server, installed and configured squid and then Dansguardian according to this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DansGuardian

When I tried to start Dansguardian, the shell returned:
Quote:
/etc/init.d/dansguardian start
[....] Starting dansguardian (via systemctl): dansguardian.serviceJob for dansguardian.service failed. See 'systemctl status dansguard
ian.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.
failed!
So I checked journalctl -xn and it returned:

So this is my major road block for the day. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

biosboy4

Dansguardian won't start?
Consider yourself fortunate.

One reason, it's a constantly running resource hog. Another is that unless it is
configured to allow near unrestricted access to the internet, it allows virtually no access.

Everyones needs are different, since you are using Dansguardian on your server, I assume that
you want parental or administrative controls over other users on your private network.
In that regard Dansguardian excels, you can establish controls so draconian that unsupervised users will only be able to utilize offline functions (games etc.) If the other users are responsible adults, they will find the restrictive web filter very annoying.
Dansguardian is purposely not easy to configure for security reasons.
However as a web filter, I would agree, it is probably the best.
My experience with Ubuntu CE left me with a distaste for Dansguardian, mainly because of my lack of proficiency and lack of help from the Dansguardian Site.
The only way I could use Ubuntu CE was to uninstall Dansguardian, which meant also uninstalling the browser, disabling the ubuntu firewall, then reinstalling an untweaked browser.
I understand that dans has a new graphical interface making it more user friendly to
configure. I hope you can get it working, you may be very happy with it.
Don't mind me, dansguardian is a pet peeve and I was just on a rant.

The error indicates a permissions issue regarding /var/log/dansguardian. Are you sure that you executed the line:

Code:
sudo chown -R proxy:proxy /var/log/dansguardian
properly? Can you check that the ownership rights of that directory are as expected?

I noticed you are using a ubuntu tutorial for your install, although I've only been using Debian a short time, I am finding that ubuntu tutorials don't always work with Debian.
Heres one, more Debian specific.
https://www.server-world.info/en/not..._8&p=squid&f=7

There is also a help forum, at the Dansguardian site that may offer some advice on a
Debian specific install.
http://dansguardian.org/?page=documentation

Alternatively, Ubuntu offers a server edition of the new 16.04 release, available in both
32 and 64 bit.

The squid/dansguardian vm is officially live.

The problem turned out to be related to squid; squid3 had no such problems.

Also, newer versions of squid place the squid.conf file under /etc/squid3/squid.conf, there's lots of old squid info that states otherwise.

Regards,

Drew

Glad you got it working. I am very interested in hearing your perspective regarding
Dansguardian, after you have used it for awhile. Both pro and con.

Regards.

It's been live since last Thursday and so far I've only had to make 1 configuration change to allow authorized browsing. Though I will admit that it took me 3 different configuration changes to figure the proper way to make it work.

It also seems to block anything I can think of that's unauthorized.

So far, over-all, it's old-school, it works, and I like it. I'll let you know how my feelings change in the future.

Thanks,

biosboy4

PS: A way better solution for us than a 2k+ Barracuda that they originally asked me to quote.

Also, it took me a while to go live with it since I built a whole Xen cluster for it (freaking overkill) so it could have HA and so I could spin up other things without hitting the production ESXi's. Omg I don't even want to talk about the SAN though.... 5900rpm archive drives.... I had to break out the 60gb ssds for the os's because that crap was terrible. Don't ever put archive drives in anything, ever, use a freaking tape or something lol. /Rant-over
