help!
i desperatly need the internet on linux
how do i set it up using kppp or if there is another program, ill use that i just need help

What is the exact problem you're expereincing? - using kppp you can simply add the ISP phone number, your username & password, select the modem device name and set the speed - that's sufficient for a connection.

i have entered all my isp info and i do know all the info required for a connection from scratch in windows, but it just sits there when i hit "connect" in kppp and it doesnt do anything it says initailizing modem and just doesnt do anything after that

I'd say your modem is not setup correctly. If it's a win modem you might have problems at first but nothing that can't be solved by implementing a little research.

Man it's been ages since I dialed in with ppp but I recall a similar issue after installing the drivers a sym link was created like /dev/modem instead of where my modem was actually located. For some people /dev/modem works just fine, it just didn't for me so I had to provide the exact device name like /dev/ttyS1 etc. Take a look into that it may help you with kppp.

Yea more info on what kind of modem you have would be helpfull. I have been using slack9.1 with a dial up for about a year now so im pretty famillar with fixing issues with it. The problem is probaby with that nasty /dev/modem link try changeing it to ttyS0 for com1 <-- only works with a external hardware modem. If its not and its a win modem (99% of them are) then your gonna have some pain getting it working.



other then that Slackware is pretty unforgiving for a novice user :D

Is it an external serial modem or an internal software winmodem - if it's an external serial modem the device name is often /dev/ttyS0 - you can select this on one of the tabs - no drivers needed - if it's a winmodem you'd typically need to install a driver - if so, have you installed any drivers for it?

I havent used/installed any drivers or anything but i know its an internal modem and im pretty sure ive got the right link as far as /dev/"whatever" is concerned (all other links ive tryed say "unable to open modem" or "modem busy" and the one im using [pretty sure its /dev/ttys1] says initializing modem when i hit connect)

maybe im missing something though, can someone post there configuration maybe im puting some info in the wrong box or something????

I tried clicking "query modem" to see if that detected it or something, i dont know what the "ati commands" are, was i supposed to fill something in those boxes?

by the way im using an ess es56t-pi data fax modem (com3 is what windows says)

maybe im not entering the right modem but that link gets me the farthest

I know this mabe a little late and sorry for not getting back to your question ive been in serial connection hell with my windows computer lateley :D but anyway. If its internal then its probably a win modem

Do a lspci and post the output here this could help us out in figuring out the problem.
