daemon to count number of times programs are being run

Hey all,
I'm an admin at my schools Linux lab, and we're looking at cleaning up our image. Now we need to know what programs are being used on a regular basis and which are not. Is anybody aware of a program that runs in the background of a machine and keeps track of what programs are being run and print me a report? This would really help cuz I don't have time to code something similar myself.

TIA

-JSS
