Cyrus Imap config problem - please help

I am a total newbie in the land of Linux and IMAP. I'm trying to configure Cyrus IMAP to run with Postfix on my Linux server, for eventual use with Squirrelmail. As such I'm getting the following error, I can't figure out how to fix (been searching the web for a long time now):

I try to execute the command:
cyradm --user cyrus localhost

the spam I get back is as follows: (after I enter the password I think I created for cyrus)

IMAP Password:
Login failed: generic failure at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5/i586-linux-thread-multi/Cyrus/IMAP/ line 118
cyradm: cannot authenticate to server with as cyrus

My /etc/imapd.conf file looks like this:
configdirectory: /var/lib/imap
partition-default: /var/spool/imap
sievedir: /var/lib/sieve
admins: cyrus root
allowanonymouslogin: no
autocreatequota: 15000
reject8bit: no
quotawarn: 90
timeout: 30
poptimeout: 10
dracinterval: 0
drachost: localhost
sasl_pwcheck_method: saslauthd
lmtp_overquota_perm_failure: no

I am using SuSE 9.2 professional. I installed Cyrus from the RPM build supplied by SuSE via YasT.

I have tried to create a password for Cyrus by:
/usr/sbin/saslpasswd2 -c cyrus
and then entering a password

also I have run:
passwd cyrus

I use the same password each time.

So if someone can help me I'm really really lost!!! Please help me if you can

Best Regards,

Hi all -

Fixed my own problem --- In case anyone out there runs into this issue --

You have to be able to pass the login flag from -a pam to saslauthd --- i had 2 big problems causing my 'general error'

#1 saslauthd was NOT running
#2 need to call saslauthd with the -a pam option so command which fixed my problem:

saslauthd -a pam

Well there you go!!
