Angry CVS server: a hundred WTF!

My issue is subtle.
CVS server (cvsd) re-installed ground zero.
Created empty new repo in /var/lib/cvs
Added user fabio with pw fabio using cvsd-passwd.
Logging in with eclipse plugin or via shell: incorrect un/pw!!
syslog -> exit status 1
Service is running correctly on right ip.
Read and write permission to user cvsd:cvsd on all repos.
Also... following the basic newbie tutorial on ubuntu reference (what a shame ) from begin to end does not work!
Other ideas on what to check?
Thanks

If you setup a new repository, you could use SVN if you don't have additional limitation (like your boss want to see CVS). It is similar, but sort of replaced CVS.

Newer projects and the Linux kernel use distributed system, like Git, but the way it work is different from CVS/SVN.

It may not solve your problem, but I think this post was required anyway.

Unhappy

Sorry, we're already using SVN. This CVS is for legacy repos.

Cause:
cvs -d server:fabio@xxx.yyy:/var/lib/cvs/ login

Effect:
Nov 23 09:34:35 ares cvsd[9440]: connection from 192.168.1.10 42277
Nov 23 09:34:35 ares cvsd[9440]: debug: fork() succeeded (child pid=9624)
Nov 23 09:34:35 ares cvsd[9440]: cvs command exited with exit-status 1
... on syslog

it clearly read from /var/lib/cvs/CVSROOT/passwd which contains fabio with cvsd-passwd setted password.

This can really make your day brown...
