Customizing Konqueror to be like IE
 

Before you flame, just want to know if I can get one of the conveniences I enjoyed in IE to work in Konqueror. I liked being able to type in "microsoft" into the location bar, then pressing ctrl-enter and it adds "http://www." and ".com" around "microsoft" for me, and automatically starts loading the site. Is this ever-tweakable Linux able to do this for me? May sound lazy, but I found it to be one of IE's greatest and most used features.

mozilla will do it for you.

Really? I just tried and it didn't work. I'm not talking about trying to resolve the host "microsoft" and then figuring out that there's a match with www.microsoft.com. I mean IE actually adds the http://www. and .com before going to that location.

Well you have access to the sourcecode. So you could always add the feature yourself.
How does Internet Explorer determine whether it should add .com, .net, .org or some other country extension? Or does it just assume that it must be a .com address? I think people's opinions vary on the usefullness of a feature like this. I personally find it irritating when Microsoft applications try to assume they know what you want.

I know what you mean, having MS second guess me drives me nuts, but that's why I like this feature. If I know it's a .org or .edu (which I only type in very rarely, as I have linuxq's.org and my university bookmarked) I don't have to do a ctrl-enter. However, for the overwhelming majority of sites, I can just type in sitename and hit ctrl-enter when I know it's a dot com. It doesn't try to force me, I'm still in charge, which I like.

Trying to settle on a browser to use in Linux is a bit frustrating. I compare to MS, and want to have a fast, java, flash, real, mouse side-button, and ctrl-enter supporting browser to name a few, but can't find one option that does it all. I have to admit that IE does a better job of this. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before things like this are worked out.

As for Mozilla, just enter the name of the site like "yahoo" and hit enter (NOT ctrl-enter) It'll add www. en .com for you.

Flash, Java and Real all work in mozilla. Just load the right plugins.

On a LAN, expanding names out like that is broken, if Mozilla doesn't implement this I suspect that's why

have you tried Opera? it seems that between Mozilla and Opera, every possible feature is available (actually too many features, for me)...

Mozilla 1.3 -> Edit -> Preferences -> Navigator -> Smart Browsing
Turn on the auto domain guessing.

IIRC Opera lets you specify which things to try adding. Maybe it was Konq. :)
