Customize the Gnome Window List

I would like to be able to customize the Window List applet in Gnome (The panel applet that displays all the open windows).
For example, I would like to be able to have different icons for the Thunderbird Inbox and for messages. (Compose already has its own icon.)

Where does the Window List applet read the window title and the icon which is displayed? (Interesting to note that some apps start with the icon in the applications menu, and then jump to a new icon after the window is open.)

A more general question: where do you find ALL the stats on open windows?

Well, the first place you probably need to look is at the code for whatever applet you are interested in. Here's CVS: http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-applets/ but I don't see any code for the winlist applet. Look around for the developer docs on this, which are probably with the applet code.
