Customisable hotkeys in Firefox????
 

Hi all

I work with my laptop in two environments every day - one with a direct wireless connection, and one with a proxy server. I regularly have to change my Firefox settings from one to the other.

eg Edit>Preferences>Network>Settings>Direct connection to the internet>OK, Enter>close, Enter

I'm sick of doing this.. VERY sick. I've searched high and low but cant find a quick and easy method to do this. As I'm just changing one setting, can I somehow set up a HOTKEY method of doing this - eg press Ctrl, shift and say, F9 changes my connection setting one way, and then another sets it back?

ANY other method considered.

Not really a 'Linux' question I know, but this forum is the best I've ever found for getting answers!

So you are using one wireless connection and one wired connection correct?

If you found in which text file the settings are stored (maybe prefs.js i dont recall the names now) you could make a couple of bash scripts that 'cp direct.js prefs.js' and 'cp proxy.js prefs.js' thereby overwriting each with the settings.

Do that before starting firefox and it should work. I don't think there's any way of binding keys to do that in ff, so that's how I would do it.

Brian1 - no, I have a WEP encoded wireless connection at one location, and a Proxy wireless at the other. All I have to change is the network setting from 'Direct connection to the internet' to 'Manual Proxy configuration'. YThat is all I need to do.

dive - I'll have a look around to see where the settings are, but unfortunately I don't know how to write a bash script. I'll obviously have to learn! I need to anyway.

Any other suggestions welcome

I have a solution to this now and it is SO neat...

I installed the 'Custom Buttons' add-on to Firefox and then asked on the Custom Buttons forum if anyone could help me. Within a couple of days someone offered to write a custom button for me - and did so! Here is the link if anyone is interested:

I now have a small button on my Firefox toolbar that I click once to change my connection to the Proxy server settings, and click once more to move back to direct settings.

This is an awesome solution that will be so useful.
