Cursor display problem in Konsole

I've recently upgraded from Slackware 13.1 to 13.37 (64-bit). Since the upgrade I've had a weird problem with the Konsole: the cursor seems to have some extra spacing in front of it. So instead of the cursor being a single character width (e.g. block or underscore), it is wider (the width of the block + some blank space).

Even more strangely is that this extra space seems to increase depending on how far along the line of text you move. So near the Konsole prompt the cursor looks mostly correct, and as you type (or move along a line of text) the cursor space gets wider and wider.

KDE version is 4.5.5 and Konsole is version 2.5.4. I've tried creating a new profile in Konsole, changing the Konsole profile settings related to cursor, and switching to a different user (with no bashrc files) and it made no difference. In vim, the cursor problem is still there. In other terminal emulators the cursor looks fine; it seems to be just Konsole.

Is this a font problem maybe? I'd really appreciate any help that anyone could provide, thanks!
