Curiousity & Debian

Hello:

I bought a copy of Debian "Sarge". It wouldn't run at all on my box (std desktop). I inquired of Linux Forums if I could get help getting it to run. Was told, "Forget Sarge, switch to 'Etch'".
What I would like to know is:
Has "Etch" been replaced yet? If not, is it stable, problem free and likely to run on a Standard Desktop?

Appreciate any and all inputs.

Thanks,

Guv.

Sarge is the old stable, Etch is the newer stable. You may even want to try Lenny/testing . My suggestion would be to get a couple livecds like knoppix, sidux and see if they work. If they do then lenny should work with no problem.

Of course it also depends on your hardware.

You don't say what the problem was with Sarge. Craigevil is right that Sarge is the older stable version. If there was a small problem with newer hardware Etch may work. Debian stable is "stable" to the point that people will complain it is not new enough at some point.
Until you really say what the problem was with Sarge, no one can really answer your question.
Craigevil's suggestion to try some live CD's is also good advice. I would suggest the Ubuntu live/install CD. The newest version should be out soon now.
