cups usb conflicts

I have installed cups to get printing setup on slackware 9.0. The printer is networked, so all usb ports should be open. I recently tried to setup an usb burner on the same machine. The machine sees the device and assigns an IRQ to the device. Everything is looking fine, but when cups starts to load the machine hangs.

My guess is that cups is having problems with something besides a printer being plugged into a usb port. Has anyone else had this problem and or resolved this problem. I don't really want get rid of cups.

Thanks for any input.
