This is becoming unbearably frustrating. So much trouble for what should be a simple operations.
I have set up this printer before, and it worked, now it won't. I am using Debian 3.1 unstable, and CUPS 1.1 - I guess, how do I tell?
I would go to print a test page, and printer would keep feeding pages. Some with a tiny about of gibberish, some blank pages. One thing for sure, once the printer starts, it will *not* stop until I do something drastic: pull the plug remove all paper, something like that. Cancelling the job, pulling the parellel cord, or shutting down linux, will do nothing.
The Model/Driver I have set is:
HP Laserjet PCL 6 CUPS (en).
Here is what I am doing to try and get this to work:
http://localhost:631
Printers
Add Printer
Name: hplj6
Device for hplj6 = Parallel Port #1
Model/Driver for hplj6
----- now this is strange. I think I have HPLIP installed, I know I did before, but I don't see it on this menu. I only see HP. I don't think this is right. I have tried re-installing hplip, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling hplip, I have tried uninstalling and reinstallin CUPS. I can't seem to get HPLIP. Maybe I am remembering this wrong?
Anyway, I chose the HP as the make, and get a list of of about six printers. I chose the one that seems to be right. But I seem to remember having different choices before.
OT: said it before, have to say it again, such "simple" admin tasks are one are where windows is far superior to linux. I never had all this trouble installing a printer in windows. In fact, with XP, I don't even have to add drivers for this printer, I just plug it in.
