Cups doesn't see PTAL?

I don't get it, I run install the hpoj-0.91.tar.gz package, I run ptal-init setup, and then just to be safe, I do ptal-init restart and then I restart cups. Cups doesn't see PTAL at all though, and that's the only way I can get my printer to work with USB. I magically got it to work somehow under Slack9.1, and I know I have to be able to get it working under 10.0. At least CUPS sees that I have parallell ports now, though.....

Edit:

I guess I found the culprate. I can no longer trust checkinstall to properly make packages and install them until they update it for the newer installpkg tools.
