Hi
Do you need the client and server CUPS software installed on a client to support printers being added automatically via browsing?
Do you need the PPD files installed on the client?
Iv read (parts) of the manual to no success. It certainly doesnt mention anything specific about installing CUPS on client machines. Maybe there is some other program im ment to use?
More info:
Im using debian testing on the client
Iv had CUPS set up on on a debian woody server running for a while.
We can print (almost) fine to it from windows, having specified the location.
Im trying to set up printing on a linux computer to use the server. After lots of wasted time, a simple "ServerName 192.168.0.5" in /etc/cups/client.conf made it work almost automagically.
That worked with cupsys-client installed.
Cups manual says this is not the recomended way. It says "Do nothing" is the recomended way to get full browsing support... (after having set up broadcasting to the local network on the server. This appears to be working, I can see the packets in ethereal) (Is this a CUPS feature or an IPP feature?)
This is not working.
I installed the cupsys server package on the client, and the printers then apear magically. However the excitment was short lived. Then they disapear, then it crashes(the gnome printer viewing app), then they apear again, then just one apears, I cant see the real cue on the server (i could before hand with just the client package installed, and I can see the real cue in wondows), I can only see a local cue of documents that refuse to print. some of that might have been exagerated but you get the idea.
It wasnt doing anything predictable. Im viewing the printers from gnome. I cant find the name of the app but its under System Tools -> Printing
