CUPS and logging in

Bit of a strange one this, I can see the cups GUI fine, by going to localhost:631 but if I want to do anything, it asks for a user name and password, but

it doesn't matter whether I supply either user or root u/names and p/words, it keeps hitting me with "failure to authenticate" and won't let me in.

I don't know why that might be, can anyone help please ???

regards

John
