Cups

How do I know if I have cups installed and installed correctly, please. I appreciate any help.

pljvaldez 11-20-2006 06:18 PM

The easiest way is to type http://localhost:631 into your browser (on the same machine with linux/cups).

24giovanni 11-20-2006 06:26 PM

would you mind helping me install my network printer please. I would really appreciate it.

pljvaldez 11-20-2006 06:39 PM

If you can give me more information.

The general procedure is to
Code:

1) type the above into firefox or konqueror or whatever web browser you want.
2) Click on Printer Admininstration (or Manage Printers)
3) Click Add Printer which should prompt you for your root password (or your user password if you added yourself to the lpadmin group
4) Write a name for your printer (no spaces, /'s, or #'s, I believe are allowed)
5) Write a Location (like "Office 2222")
6) Write a description ("HP color laserjet") and hit continue
7) Select Device -- I believe here you want LPD/LPR Host or Printer
8) For Device URI enter lpd://hostname (or IP address)
9) Select the make (HP, Epson, PS) -- here you'll have to know what type of printer it is or choose PostScript which is sort of generic
10) Select the Model and hit Finish

The hardest part will be finding the network address for your network printer and the make/model that works. Sometimes postscript is the only one that works. It took me a while to fiddle around with it and get it all working.

Is that for a NETWORK printer?

24giovanni 11-20-2006 06:43 PM

I have a psc1400 and i was told I have to download hp-lip-1.6.10.run but I am not sure where to run it when I get to command line.

24giovanni 11-20-2006 07:04 PM

How do I compile this driver please?

pljvaldez 11-20-2006 07:08 PM

When I look for PSC 1400, it doesn't look like this is a network printer. What I gave you would be a for a true network printer, like a LaserJet 8000. Something that runs over ethernet from a print server.

The PSC1400 looks like a desktop USB all-in-one type printer...

How is this setup? Is it plugged into your USB port? Or by network printer, do you mean that someone on your network is sharing it and you want to use it?

24giovanni 11-20-2006 07:18 PM

It is connected to my XP computer with a USB connection from the computer to the printer. I want to share it on my FC5 machine.

Follow the instructions for redhat/fedore here. http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/index.html

Brian

Okay, well, that's different. First you have to make sure Samba is installed and working. You also might have to install the hplip driver from your distribution repositories. Then at step 7, you'll want to select "Windows printer shared with Samba" or something like that. Then you'll have to put in your XP machine's IP address and the printer sharename (like smb://192.168.1.5/psc1400). Then you'll probably have to select "HP" for the make and "PSC 1400" for the model.

Brian, I have it d/l to my desktop but in step 3 it says to put it some place...where would that be please?

24giovanni 11-20-2006 07:50 PM

the file on my desktop is calledd hplip-1.6.10.run. I assume it must be run so how do I do that please?

24giovanni 11-20-2006 08:37 PM

Brian, In step 4 the following states

Using the Printer Setup Menus on your printer, print the "Network Configuration" page. This page will have the IP address of the printer, which is essential to complete the printer setup.

How do I tell the IP address of my printer? Wouldn't be the IP address of the computer it is connected to?

Well, you know some of us are at work and can't check it every 5 minutes to help out. I realize that you're frustrated by your problem. But you're going the wrong way to get it solved.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I did as much as I know how (configuring CUPS w/ the web interface). Maybe try to start a new thread so other people can get involved. Title it something more descriptive than "Cups", for example "HP PSC1400 not printing via Samba on FC5"...

Sorry I couldn't help any more. Good luck!

24giovanni 11-21-2006 07:25 PM

pljvaldez, I wasn't trying to single you out if that is how it looks. My apologies if so. Good idea on title thread I think I will try that. Thanks for the help you did give me.
