Question CRRR at the beginning of each track - Rythmbox

since last week, rythmbox makes a loud CRRR (sound peak disturbance like when you change channel on the tv or change source on your hifi set, whatever you call it) at the beginning of each track. and i'm pretty sure my speakers don't like the treatment. it used to work before, i haven't changed sound settings, so really no idea what is happening... :-(

other players do not have this problem, but i like to use rythmbox for the library function.

any idea anyone what that could be and how to solve the problem?
alternatively, any other player that offers the same library capabilities (browsing by genre, artist, album through 100s of songs)?

cheers
fred
