crossover office

I recently came across a program called Crossover Office that claims to enable win32 applications on linux better than wine does. The main thing that interested me is the ability to run Adobe Photoshop 7. This is the program my brother is missing (he cant get used to Gimp for some reason) and is willing to erase linux to go back to windows just for photoshop.

Anyways, I downloaded the trial and so far so good. I got adobe photoshpo 7 installed and it works 100%. This is a good thing because i am able to keep my brother from crossing back to the dark side.

In my findings, I read a lot about this program and it seems I may be able to use it too. You see, I am a web developer and I am always needing someone else to test my websites I build on a windows box in Internet Explorer. It seems that this Crossover Office will allow me to run IE 6.0 on linux. I haven't tried this yet, and I am skeptical of it a little. But I think I will eventually give this a try.

If all goes well for both me and my brother, I think I will buy 2 standard licenses. One for myself and one for my bro. The pro is too expensive for me to buy two of them...

Has anyone tried out this software or bought any copies? Is the Professional edition worth the extra money?

I'm just looking for some peoples thoughts and reviews on this program before I buy it. I like to get all the facts and opinions. heh

X-over is an excellent program and their continued success helps with the base Wine program's success.

i recently got a copy of codeweavers crossover office. but it is in .rpm format. anyone have a step-by-step manual.

i kno i have to use alien to convert it to .deb format. but after that i don't know what's next.

i also have cedega 5.1 but i also don't know what to do with it.

My version was a self installing shell script (.sh file)..

Where did you get your copy?

Anyways, yeah - turn the .rpm into a .deb using alien. Then just install it like normal.

dpkg -i your_file.deb

After this, I dont know because like I said, I've never installed it using a package.

Crossover Office is a very good program, I have a copy that I use to run a few Windows apps. From reading their site it looks like they've made very nice progress in the last 6 months or so, sadly my subscription ran out about 18 months ago so I can't try it

yhatz: You should purchase it and Cedega too, if you did you'd know that they both are available in .deb format which would make installation significantly easier. If you feel something is good enough to use then it's obviously good enough to pay for.

Crossover Office and Cedega are forks of Wine. If you like open-source, you might try out Wine first, then move to these others if it is insufficient.

I tried that once, but I had problems getting VMWare to grab my usb before linux did.

VMWare also ran really really slow on my system (2.7ghz, 1024 ddr ram). It was so slow I was unable to to do the work I wanted to do (PS7).

With Cross Over Office I am able to install IE6 and PS7, which I need on a daily basis for my web programming.
