Cross Compiling For ARM

I have been trying to cross compile large applications (all that use automake, configure and a whole lot of "auto" stuff) for my ARM, without much success.

My goal is to cross compile GNU Radio for my ARM processor. I've got a toolchain and have done the basic cross compiling of a "hello world" program on my x86 machine.

It's rather simple. The hard part is cross compiling giant applications, that have multiple dependancies on libraries.

I have tried using scratchbox2 with qemu, and it is just as slow at compiling as if it were native. Maybe I have not setup it up correctly.

To clarify what I have done so far:

1. Created an SD card that boots Ubuntu for my Platform. Updated + downloaded libraries required for building using the package manger.
2. Copied the rootfs to my x86 machine to seed my scratchbox2 environment
3. Setup scratchbox2 with the cross compiler
4. sb2 -eR make
5. Overwrote the SD card's rootfs with my scratchbox2's rootfs (the one where I was compiling on)
6. Ran into errors because files used names in relationship to my main x86 machine.

What is the preferred method of cross compiling, or even getting a cross compilation "environment" ready?
